In being tasked to write a blog I found myself relentlessly pounding my head against the wall in search of material that I was enthusiastic about writing. It than occurred to me that what a better way to share my recent get away with all my friends and family than through a posting they could all read.
My journey started as a surprise birthday trip for my partner to wine country. Over the past few months I was debating on how I was going to pull this off without him knowing. I wrestled back and forth with myself on whether I disclose we would be taking a trip or someone pack everything for him without him realizing. In fear of causing him angst I had a co-worker who was watching our dog for us while we were gone “accidentally” let it slip that we were going to Denver. Why Denver was chosen I couldn’t tell you, but the plan worked. Initially he was skeptical that we were up to something else, but with a bit of convincing I was able to lure him into thinking that we would be hitting the mile high city.
The next morning we packed our bags and headed out west. I did everything in my power to detract him from noticing that we were destined to SFO rather than DEN. Luckily for me it wasn’t very difficult. I thought for sure that he would notice where we were going once we got to the plane, but to my delight we managed to board out plane to “Denver”. It wasn’t until the flight attendant came over head and announced that we would be heading to San Fran that surprise set in. At first he was initially confused. He thought that we had boarded the wrong plane. Once reality set in our little weekend getaway began.
We spent the first 2 days in the city; soaking up all the unique smells, sites, and tastes. After are journey there was over we headed out Sonoma; soaking up all the wine for the remainder of the trip. Sonoma was beautiful, sunny, and quant. We came back with a winters worth of wine to stock pile and lots of fresh olive oil to satisfy any palate.
Upon my return I came back to email stacked full, lots of work to be done, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. My take away for getaways is they are wonderful in the moment, but regretful upon return…especially when arrival time is 1 am. A piece fo advice for any who choose to journey; be sure to check your flight times am and pm before booking a flight.
